Kathryn Rose, b. 1995
primarily exhibited as a miniature oil painter, Kathryn Rose paints photorealistic portraits with a whimsical twist. in her paintings, most measuring a mere few inches in height, scale is used as a way to stretch the limits of imagination and to put emphasis on certain ideas or themes. the barely visible elements in her works are where the stories and commentary are hidden. born in california, Rose is currently based in brooklyn, new york. she is a graduate of Parsons: the New School of Design in nye, where she studied animation and painting. having grown up in close proximity to los angeles, the city’s emphasis on storytelling through cinematography and animation heavily impacted her artistic development. throughout Rose’s works, stories are hidden. her work is driven by the desire to tell women’s stories, highlighting outdated notions of female fragility and exploring methods in which to lift women up. after the completion of a painting, she then often creates an animation of the piece to further bring to life its story and movement.
